SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A big second half helped the Evangel women's basketball rally past No. 19, William Penn, Saturday afternoon to hand the Statesmen just their second loss of the season.
The Crusaders fell behind early 24-14 after the first quarter, however, Evangel continued to battle back outscoring William Penn 21-13 in the second quarter going into halftime down 37-35. Evangel roared out of the locker room with a 17-3 run to break the game open.
William Penn would make a run at the Crusaders in the fourth quarter pulling with three at 64-61 with 2:29 left. However, Brianna Vogts would catch a rebound and putback to push the Evangel lead back to five with 1:27 left.
The Statesmen would be forced to foul under one minute left, as Evangel finished 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.
Mackenzie Farmer led a balanced attack from Evangel with 20 points and six assists, while Kylee Moore and Brianna Vogts added 15 points each. Vogts earned her third double-double with 10 boards, as Bayley Harman was just shy at eight points and nine rebounds.
William Penn was led by 19 points from Shamiah Oliver as the Statesmen shot just 36 percent from the field.
St. George's is providing donuts for the team for another sweet win over a nationally ranked opponent.
Evangel heads back on the road Monday with a trip to No. 23 Central Methodist. The Crusaders won the first meeting in Springfield as tipoff in Fayette, Missouri is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
