PERU, Neb. -- The Evangel women's basketball got back in the win column Saturday fighting off a gritty Peru State team, 69-48, in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The Crusaders and Bobcats locked in early, but a 22-8 second quarter helped Evangel create some separation to take a 32-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
Evangel locked in on defense holding Peru State to just 23 percent shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers on 14 steals. The Crusaders also outscored Peru 36-18 in the paint.
Lexie Vaught posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards as the conference leader in steals tied a season-high with seven steals to pull just shy of a triple-double. Vaught was joined in double figures by Brianna Vogts with 11 points and Kylee Moore and Mackenzie Farmer finishing with 10 points each.
Emma Lander added seven points and 13 rebounds for Evangel in the win.
Peru State was led by 11 points and 15 rebounds from Giovanna Silva as the Bobcats outrebounded Evangel, 47-44.
Evangel returns to the Ashcroft Center for a midweek matchup with Culver-Stockton. Wednesday's tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
