BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – A pair of late goals by the Baker University propelled the Wildcats past the Evangel women's soccer team, 2-0, Tuesday evening in conference action.
The Crusaders played nearly even with the Wildcats heading into halftime tied 0-0. Evangel matched Baker through the first 65 minutes continuing a trend of hanging with the nation's top teams each week.
"We played a great soccer match tonight," said head coach Bruce Deaton. "Our continued improvement as a team and program was evident in the level of play this evening. I am beyond proud of these ladies and what they continue to do to push our team to the next level"
The first goal for Baker came in the 68th minute by Sierra McKinney from Kara Knapp. The Wildcats would strike again four minutes later, adding an insurance goal in the 72nd minute from Kady Dieringer.
Evangel placed four of its seven shots on goal in the match as the Wildcat goalie finished with four saves.
Josie Gregory added six saves for the Crusaders in the loss.
The Crusaders sit half a game behind Clarke for the final spot in the Heart Postseason tournament with two matches left in the regular season for Evangel. Clarke still has three games while holding the slim lead over Evangel.
Evangel will have nearly a week off before the final swing of the regular season starting next Tuesday at Coryell Field against No. 19 Benedictine. Action is scheduled to start at noon against the Ravens.
