SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A second straight shutout helped propel the Evangel women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Avila University Saturday evening in non-conference action.
The Crusaders improved to 4-1-1 on the season and won their second straight on the young season. The shutout was the fourth of the year as Evangel has allowed just six goals all season with four coming from the lone loss of the season.
Evangel jumped out to an early lead with goals from Sedona Townsend and Ashley Ard in the first 14 minutes of the match. Townsend scored 3:58 into the first half as Ard scored just before the 15-minute mark.
Both goals were assisted by Bianca Biffert who picked up her second and third assist of the season. Townsend earned her third goal of the year, second best for Evangel.
Evangel pushed its lead to 4-0 late in the first half when Amber Ellis pushed a ball past the Avila goalkeeper in the 35th minute. Ellis scored her fourth goal of the year as she is tied for the team lead.
The fourth goal came on an own goal forced inside the box that skipped off an Avila defender to push the Crusader to a 4-0 advantage.
Avila finished with 13 saves from goalkeeper Madison Baker, while Charlsey Seidel added three saves for Evangel.
The Crusaders doubled the Eagles in shot placing 25 attempts to 10 for Avila. Evangel also placed 16 shots on goal, while limiting Avila to just three of its 10 shots on goal.
