ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Evangel volleyball team capped a solid opening weekend Saturday with wins over Keiser (Mich.), 3-2, and host Concordia (Mich.), 3-0, before falling to Madonna (Mich.), 3-0 to end the tournament.
The Crusaders played five matches in two days to open the season 3-2 in Michigan. Olivia Johnston earned All-Tournament Team accolades finishing with 32 kills on the weekend and a .241 hitting percentage.
Match 1 vs. Keiser (Mich.)
The first match of the day saw both teams go back and forth before Evangel clipped Keiser, 3-2, in five sets. The Crusaders recovered from a negative hitting percentage in the second set to hit .500 in the third set and .294 in the deciding set.
Evangel was led offensively by Olivia Johnston who finished with a double-double adding 14 kills to her 14 digs. Bridget Petersen helped Johnston with 13 kills with an efficient .435 hitting percentage as Victoria Fishback paced the offense with 48 assists.
Jorden Stacey tallied 27 digs while Petersen added six blocks.
Match 2 vs. Concordia (Mich.)
Against the host team, Concordia, Evangel stayed one-step ahead of the Cardinals with a 25-23, 28-26, 25-18 victory.
The Crusaders were again led offensively by Johnston as she finished with a game-high 11 kills. She also posted a double-double with 13 digs on the defensive side of the net.
The defense for Evangel stepped up against Concordia with nine team blocks including three from Hayley Leeper. Stacey recorded 28 digs to the lead the way for Evangel while Hailey Noblitt tallied 15 digs in the win.
Match 3 vs. Madonna (Mich.)
The night cap saw the Crusaders run out of steam against Madonna in a 3-0 sweep. Evangel struggled offensively hitting just .138 as a team while Madonna posted a .314 hitting percentage.
Petersen posted eight kills to lead Evangel while Fishback added 32 assists in the loss. Jorden Stacey added 26 digs while Leeper tallied three blocks in the final match.
Evangel continues action at the Concordia Kickoff Tournament Saturday with a trio of matches starting at 10 a.m. against Keiser. The Crusaders take on the host Concordia at 2 p.m. before finishing with Madonna at 4 p.m.
