SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel volleyball team finished an incredible comeback Tuesday night taking a five-set thriller, 3-2, from MidAmerica Nazarene in the conference opener.

The Crusaders dropped the first two sets before rallying to win the final three including a 25-22 win in the fourth set, and a 15-12 victory in the deciding set. After a slow start, Evangel rallied to hit over the .260 mark in the third and fourth sets to swing the momentum back in their favor.

Offensively, Bridget Petersen and Heather Gahm led the way with 22 and 19 kills respectively. Petersen finished with a blistering .419 hitting percentage and also added four blocks on the defensive side of the net.

Victoria Fishback paced the offense with 58 assists while Bella Lemusu added 11 kills.

Eryn Russell and Jorden Stacey each finished with 21 and 20 digs each as Emma Lander tallied three blocks.

MNU was led by Maria Ayzaguer with 12 kills and Marina Sanches with seven blocks. The Pioneers entered just 1-9 on the season but had faced seven nationally-ranked opponents in their first 10 matches of the season.

Evangel will host its second tournament of the early season Friday and Saturday at The Courts in Springfield. Action begins Friday and continues Saturday with three games on two courts each day.
