VANCOUVER, Wash. — The trio for Evangel cross country that is Shane Burns, Duncan Gakuru, and Leslie Perona continued their reach Friday at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships.
"The three runners who represented Evangel's cross country team at nationals have been instrumental in taking the program to a new level of competitiveness and national recognition," said head coach Austin Jacobs. "Leslie, Duncan, and Shane have left their mark on the program and have set the tone for the future of Evangel distance running."
Two of the three finished their careers at the season's final race, the NAIA National Championships.
However, junior Shane Burns led the way for not just the Evangel runners but for all of the Heart. The Strafford, Missouri native finished 42nd after covering the course with a time of 25:43.4.
Joining Burns as the second-highest finisher from the Heart was Duncan Gakuru who posted a time of 26:04.3. Gakuru finished 64 in the field of more than 330 of the nation's top runners.
Racing in her final race for Evangel senior Leslie Perona covered the 5k course with a time of 20:39.0. Perona finished near the top 250 as the women's race also consisted of more than 340 athletes.
